Drax Power Limited is the operating subsidiary of Drax Group plc and the owner and operator of Drax Power Station, the largest, cleanest and most efficient coal-fired power station in the UK.
The output capacity of our six generators is 4,000 megawatts, making us nearly twice the size of the next largest coal-fired power station in the UK. We sell the large majority of our power through the wholesale market, with the remainder sold through our recently aquired supply company, Haven Power Limited. We currently provide enough power to meet 7% of the UK’s electricity needs.
As well as being an important strategic asset nationally, Drax is also vital to the local economy. Drax Power employs some 760 people and supports many other local jobs indirectly.
Against this contribution we make every effort to balance our commitment to the country’s energy needs with minimising environmental impacts on land, air and water. Our generating units are fitted with flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) equipment removing at least 90% of the sulphur dioxide (SO2) from emissions, and through retrofitting boosted over fire air (BOFA) technology on all our boilers we are reducing still further emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NOX). At the same time, by-products of the coal combustion and FGD processes are recycled through their further use in the construction industry.
We are committed to reducing our emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and have announced two major initiatives that together will have the capability to save over three and a half million tonnes of CO2 each year. The largest steam turbine modernisation project in UK history will see our high pressure and low pressure turbines upgraded and on completion will save one million tonnes of CO2 a year. By mid 2010, we will have the capability to deliver our target of producing 12.5% of our output from renewable fuels, this will save over two and a half million tonnes of CO2 a year. We have a very important role to play in the transition towards a low carbon economy.
In March 2009, Drax acquired Ipswich based Haven Power Limited, an electricity supply company established specifically to serve the energy needs of business customers.
Providing a real alternative to the large, multinational power suppliers, which have traditionally concentrated on domestic or large industrial users, Haven Power offers smaller businesses a simple, accurate, predictable and cost-effective electricity supply based on individual business needs.
Part of Drax Power Limited and therefore with the resources, confidence and backing of a major generation group, Haven Power is large enough to offer competitive pricing but small enough to provide a flexible, responsive service to business customers.
In 2008, we announced our proposal to develop 900MW of dedicated biomass-fired generation with Siemens Project Ventures. We intend to build, own and operate three 300MW dedicated biomass plants in the UK, with sites confirmed at Drax and Immingham.
